Although the M20 can-am racing car was manufactured in 1972, McLaren did not create any customer variants. After the Riverside event, McLaren sold the car to Fielder Racing Team. Helmut Kelleners drove it in the European Interseries championship. He used largely the same livery as the Gulf-McLaren car and was supported by Weisberg. The M20 also remained a strong contender for the championship after it was sold to the Fielder Racing Team.

UOP Shadow Can-Am team

The UOP Shadow Can-Am Team competed in the Can-Am Series in 1973 and 1974. Universal Oil Products sponsored the team and included a number privateer and works teams. They were often driven by V8 engines and were known as the "black shadows" because of their appearance in the car's title. George Follmer, who qualified quicker than Oliver, led the Elkhart team. Scooter Pat, another prominent team member drove a McLaren M20 that won the main event.

UOP Shadow Can-Am drivers
