Tradition of awarding race winners with grandfather clocks

Since 1964, the Martinsville Speedway has been awarding its prized drivers with grandfather clocks as their trophies. In an effort to distinguish races, the tradition began. Previous winners of Martinsville races had previously been presented with trophies made out of wood or glass. However, this tradition didn't become widespread until Henry Clay Earles, the track owner, decided to give all the race winners clocks. A tradition that has been going on for more than fifty years.

Fred Lorenzen received the first grandfather clock during the race at Martinsville on Sept. 27, 1964. The NASCAR Cup trophy soon overtook the clock, making it one of NASCAR's most beloved prizes. This year, the Sprint Cup Series returns to Martinsville for its Goody's Headache Relief Shot(r) 500, which will be the 50th anniversary of the grandfather clock trophy.

Speed is the most important factor for any race car driver. It is what makes them go fast. They must be fast enough to catch up with other drivers, but strong enough to keep the lead. This gives them an advantage as they can catch up to other racers at high speeds and then pull away again from them when they're not looking.

Most of the fastest cars are very light. This allows them accelerate quickly and gain speed. But this also means that they have less energy, which can limit how far they can travel in short periods of time. They need to make efficient use of energy.

Engines power most modern-day racing cars. These are similar to those found in normal passenger vehicles. These engines run on compressed gas instead of petrol. This is because petrol isn't powerful enough to provide enough power to make a car go very fast.
