Elkhart Lake's streets were used for sports car races in the 1950s. The first Elkhart Lake road race was organized by the Chicago Region Sports Car Club of America.
Clif Tufte (a former highway engineer) laid Road America's four mile circuit. The track was built on 525 acres of farmland near Elkhart Lake. Tufte must find a way for him to raise enough money to purchase and build the course. He sold some of his stock and the track was constructed.

Tufte named the track Road America after roads in the United States. September 1955 was the first completion of the track. The 4-mile track was known as "4 miles that go nowhere" and was nicknamed "4 Miles That Go Nowhere". In 1997, IndyCar decided to stick with a 4.048-mile layout, and it remains the same today.
The late 1940s saw the rise of racing on America's roads. In the 1950s, the state legislature banned auto racing on public roads. Tufte started to purchase farm land in the area of Elkhart Lake and Plymouth to allow road races to be held. Tufte started to plan the course after securing land. To raise funds for the project, Tufte employed a number influential local citizens as his helpers. He then sought advice from race course owners in Europe.
Road America was created in 1955. Tufte was successful in raising the money needed to build the track. He also sold some of his stock. The track was built in company property. The company provided funding until all of the money was raised.
