This cable television channel, known as Speed Channel, focuses exclusively on motorsports. The channel broadcasts live coverage of racing events around the world. Most Canadian television providers carry it. It covers NASCAR, Superbikes and Supercross, CART and endurance racing. Additionally, there are a few human interest programs. The studio is in Charlotte, North Carolina.

The Speed Channel started out as a sports channel called Speedvision. The channel was started by Roger L. Werner Jr., who was a pioneer of cable television. The channel featured many different programs including reality shows about automobiles, how-to and auctions on cars, and programs that were primarily focused on the automobile industry.

When the channel was launched in Canada in 1995, it had a different name. Speedvision received approval from the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) in 1997. Speedvision, which was a success story, was bought by Rupert Murdoch’s News Corporation. The channel's operations were relocated in Charlotte, North Carolina. The channel was relaunched later as Speed Channel, on February 11, 2002. The channel still provides auto racing coverage and it still broadcasts the Formula One races.


There are also programs that address the personal lives of the drivers. Many programs are hosted on the channel by ex-Fox Racing commentators Peter Windsor and Derek Daly. Geoff Bodine hosts an annual charity bobsled competition.

The Speed Channel has also expanded its programming to include the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series. The channel has also acquired the rights to the Rolex Sports Car Series and will broadcast live races from the series in the US. It will also continue to broadcast Barrett-Jackson Auctions, and the Whelen Modified Tour.
