Mario Andretti was a racing enthusiast from an early age
Mario Andretti is a well-known racecar driver. As a toddler, he would take the lid off of cupboards as wheels and race around the track. Mario Andretti, a Nazareth, Pennsylvania native, discovered he was interested in racing when he was growing up. The two grew up saving money to buy a car, which they raced at the local half-mile dirt track.

Mario Andretti began his professional life with a background in Italian motor-racing before moving into the business world. Aldo, Mario's twin brother, also racer, began racing at age 18. They shared a 1948 Hudson Hornet. Aldo Andretti was in an accident with a stock car in 1957 and was badly injured. The brothers did not have a great record and Aldo decided to retire from motor-racing. Mario, however, raced and won numerous races at the United States Auto Club.
Mario Andretti, a 1970s driver, made the switch to Formula One. There, he won 16 races as well as accumulated 12 pole positions. He was signed to the Lotus team in 1978. He won six races, and secured the International Race of Champions. In the 1980s Andretti returned to Indy cars, but he failed to win 24 hours at Le Mans.
He had bad luck at Indianapolis Motor Speedway
In 1965, Mario Andretti was a rookie race driver who had yet to win the Indianapolis 500. While most race enthusiasts assumed it would be a matter of time for Andretti, the young driver had been close to failure in all three previous races. That is until Andretti was third in that race and was named rookie champion. Andretti's poor luck at Indianapolis Motor Speedway is not over.
Andretti held the pole position during the inaugural year in Formula One, but was penalized for passing the line cars during a yellow caution period. Later, a USAC appeals committee reversed the decision and Unser won. In 1985, Andretti led 107 laps and finished second to Danny Sullivan. Unfortunately, he was struck by a fuel system problem and an ignition problem that caused him to crash in the last 20 laps. This was a sad trend that would continue into the next generation.
